Beowulf battled hideous monsters (NOT Angelina Jolie) and enriched his kingdom. What would a hero of Beowulf's stature do in today's society? What would he fight? What would he try to achieve for his people? What characteristics would he have?

  1. In today's society, Beowulf would not really have a place. He's a hero, but of the Old English variety. He does not fit in with today's society. In America today, there is not really a place for a monster slayer or hero king.
If however, one ignored all that, a hero of Beowulf's stature would try to make things better for his people. He'd fight against oppression, give out any money he had, probably try to cut down the big tycoons and spread out the money more evenly.

A good example of a modern day hero is the Dark Knight. He fights for the good of the people, but he gets to have all sorts of battles and car chases with guns and explosions and things. He helps people out, like Beowulf, by taking down the 'monsters,' kind of like the Joker. The Joker's world view, in the movie, is rather like that of Grendel in the book named after him.
A modern Beowulf, to be recognizably a Beowulf figure, would need to be brave, courageous, strong, persistent, and charismatic. He would have to be a good leader and fighter. He would need 'monsters' to fight.

  2. Today, someone like Beowulf would clearly not be fighting hideous monsters, instead he would be fighting crime, any world or political issues and just trying to help and benefit everyone for the good. He would try to achieve complete happiness and probably a safe environment for his people. Some characteristics he would have would probably be very well respected, good speaker and very bold. People would listen to him and respect him.

  3. Beowulf does things that are unbelievable. He fights huge monsters and has incredible strength. He is not really afraid of anything. He stares death in the face on a daily basis and accepts his fate no matter what could happen. A modern day example of this would be a policeman. They risk their lives everyday to protect the general public and fight crime. He would be brave and honest but a little less cocky.

  4. Beowulf does things that only a hero could do. He fights monsters and dragons. Since there are none of those today he would probably be a cop and fight crime. He would try to make the country good and promote peace. Beowulf would be brave but if he was as cocky as he was in the movie people would hate him.

  6. In today’s society a character like Beowulf would not be like he was in the movie. The things Beowulf does in the movie are unreal. He fights huge hideous monsters with no struggle at all. Beowulf would be a political people fight for the people and fighting to make better laws. He would fight for what is right and never back down.

  7. A character in Beowulf's stature today would be part of the top of the police force, fighting against evil. He would fight all of the criminals that go after killing people at different times. For his people, he would try to give a better world of everyone to live on. He would take down all of them, until the world achieved inner peace.

  8. Todays society I think Beowulf would probly be loved by some people and others would most likely hate him out of jelousy. He would fight for his people, so being in the modern times he would probably fight against harsh laws and power hungry politicians or everyday crime on the street. He would try his best to make life for his people the best it could be in today's world. His characteristics would be similar to his in the epic, in that he would be strong, loyal and smart but he would also have to be patient and understanding if he lived in today's world. Becuase if he went around killing everyone that was bad or harmed his people he would be put in jail.

  9. In the society we have today, Beowulf would be considered a super hero who fights crime. He would fight criminals and gain the respect of the people. His goal would be for order and justice. If he was a hero in todays society, the world would be a better place.

  10. In today's society, most people would be greatful for beowulf, while others would have been jealous of his succes. They would have been envious of everything he accomplished. He would fight for his people, instead of fighting for glory. He would try to achieve good laws and regulations for his people. He would most likely be very humble in todays society, but still known for his achievements.

  11. Today, a hero of Beowulf's stature would be very different. Most likely a hero would want to be unknown or very well-known. The kind of people that todays hero would most likely fight would be terrorists or people like muderers. He or she would try to achieve peace of some sort or even safty for the people. The characteristics that the hero should have are loyalty, trustworthiness, strong minded, strength, caring towrds others, bravery, and being skilled.

  12. In today's society Beowulf would be a well known hero. Instead of using his strength, he would use technology to his advantage and that would make him even more unstoppable. Beowulf would probably try to achieve the impossible, world peace. I think that he would not have to be so bold about his accomplishments (bragging). But he would be brave, truthful, and very well respected.

  13. I think that in todays society Beowulf would not have much of an exsistance. In America we do not really deal with a human who can defeat monsters. Our country is one that works together and does not recognize one sole person for their actions. A man in todays society might try to fight for wealth or aganist oppression. I think that Beowulf tried to fight for the greater good such as Superman

Superman has unexplainable powers that fight for the greater good of humanity. He tries to save people who might het hurt and is willing to sacrifice himself for others. A modern Beowulf is someone that needs to be couragous, strong and have the greatest endurance possible. He must be a leader and not a follower. Also Beowulf only fought monsters which we most certainly do not have.

  14. I believe in todays society Beowulf would parralel batman and his importance to his society. Even though this is not completely realistic, the concept of being more helpful than police and better respected by the people would lead him to concur all criminals and keep harm off the streets.

  15. A person like beowulf wouldnt have a purpose in today's society. He is indeed a hero, but they are no such things as monsters in this day in age, so he wouldnt be needed at all. If he was to fight anything in todays society, hed prob fight people terrorists, and harmful animals. He would hope to achieve peace and riches for todays society. He would have the same characteristics, such as heroic, and strong
