Frankenstein is known as a Gothic novel, there is plenty of evidence to support this statement. One example is the setting. The setting of Frankenstein is often gloomy, sometimes rainy and just gives off a creepy or eerie mood. This is one of the biggest ways to identify a Gothic novel. Another example is the monster and the way the monster comes to existence. How victor creates the monster in an unethical way. Also the way the monster is described to have a grotesque looking face. Also the way it describes the people’s reactions to seeing the monster, they seem scared and do not want to be in the presence of him.

In the sense of Gothicism is relates to stories written by Edgar Allan Poe in the sense of setting. In most of Poe's work the setting is very eerie, dark and sometimes rainy, which is the case for the setting at times in Frankenstein. Another element is the monster itself. The fact that its so grotesque almost relates to some villains in present day films. For example in most horror movies, there is a grotesque looking person or creature that seems to haunt or wreck havoc on a group of people. Although that doesn’t directly relate to Gothicism, it relates to how the monster is portrayed in gothic way in the novel. All in all, Gothicism is a major part of Frankenstein because elements of the setting are gothic and many other themes and parts of the context are gothic.

How about specifics from these chapters (13-19)? What happens, what is described that is specifically gothic?

A Gothic theme could be found in chapter 15 when the monster finds journal pages from Victors clothes. the journal entries are from when he was creating the monster. this makes the monster realize that he is such an ugly creator. he says, "God, in pity made man beautiful and aullring, afer his own image; but my form is a filthy tpe of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance." this quote shows that the monster now recognizes his ugliness and abnormalities compared to the other humans. also another form of Gothic themes is the monster seems to become vengeful in chapter 16. while "running away" he runs into William and he over hears that his father is Alphonse Frankenstein, the monster than strangles the boy to death. this as we know is Victor's little brother. these acts of violence or villain like characteristics could make this part of the novel Gothic. also the fact that the monster now becomes villain like, very violent and he is starting to kill people that Victor cares about makes it gothic.
